# What Filter Removes > Which water filters actually remove PFAS, lead and chloramine, and what they cost to run: certifier listings, not marketing, for every popular US filter. Data verified 2026-10-23. US market, prices in USD. ## Updates (dated, sourced; recalls, launches, rules, our data) - 2026-10-23: [We checked 96 filters: 44% of reduction claims are brand-tested only](https://whatfilterremoves.com/updates/certified-vs-brand-tested-claims-october-2026/). Q: Are water filter claims certified or just tested by the brand? A: Of 538 contaminant-reduction claims across 96 home water filters we track, 299 (about 56%) are listed by a certifier (NSF, WQA, IAPMO or CSA) and 239 (44%) rest only on a brand-paid lab test that no certifier lists. - 2026-10-23: [New filters from Aug-Sep 2026: none yet confirmed in a certifier listing](https://whatfilterremoves.com/updates/new-filters-aug-sep-2026-certification-pending/). Q: Are the newest water filters from Waterdrop, iSpring and AquaTru certified? A: Waterdrop, iSpring, AquaTru, Frizzlife and LifeStraw listed new filters between August 4 and September 27, 2026; as of October 23 we had not confirmed any of them in an NSF, WQA, IAPMO or CSA listing. - 2026-10-23: [Only 2 of 15 current pitchers we track are certified for PFAS](https://whatfilterremoves.com/updates/pfas-certified-pitchers-october-2026/). Q: Which water filter pitchers are certified to remove PFAS? A: Of the 15 current water filter pitchers we track, only the PUR PLUS 11-cup (Total PFAS) and the ZeroWater 10-cup (PFOA and PFOS) have a certified PFAS reduction, both listed by IAPMO R&T under NSF/ANSI 53. - 2026-10-23: [15 of 17 whole-house filters we track have no certified health claim](https://whatfilterremoves.com/updates/whole-house-filters-certification-gap-october-2026/). Q: Which whole-house water filters are certified to remove PFAS or lead? A: Only 2 of the 17 whole-house filters we track have a certified reduction for a health-related contaminant: the SpringWell Lead & Cyst system (lead, PFAS, cysts) and the Aquasana HealthShield (PFAS, VOCs). - 2026-09-30: [Court hears utilities' challenge to EPA's lead pipe rule (LCRI)](https://whatfilterremoves.com/updates/lead-pipe-rule-lcri-court-argument-2026-09-30/). Q: Is the EPA lead pipe rule (LCRI) still in effect? A: On September 30, 2026 the D.C. Circuit heard arguments in AWWA v. EPA (No. 24-1376), a challenge to the 2024 Lead and Copper Rule Improvements; the rule stays in effect, with its main compliance date on November 1, 2027. - 2026-09-18: [Appeals court backs EPA stop-sale order on Black Berkey filters](https://whatfilterremoves.com/updates/berkey-first-circuit-epa-stop-sale-2026-09-18/). Q: Can you still buy Black Berkey filters? A: On September 18, 2026 the First Circuit affirmed the denial of Berkey International's request for a preliminary injunction against EPA's 2023 stop-sale order, so the order on Black Berkey filters and systems containing them stays in place. - 2026-09-18: [PFAS drinking water rule argued in court; 2024 limits still in effect](https://whatfilterremoves.com/updates/pfas-drinking-water-rule-court-argument-2026-09-18/). Q: Are the EPA PFAS limits for drinking water still in effect? A: The D.C. Circuit heard arguments on September 18, 2026 in the utilities' challenge to EPA's 2024 PFAS drinking water rule; EPA's May 2026 proposals to change the rule are not final, so the 4 ppt PFOA and PFOS limits and the 2029 deadline still stand. - 2026-08-13: [Ninja launches HydraSense countertop filter, IAPMO-certified for Total PFAS](https://whatfilterremoves.com/updates/ninja-hydrasense-launch-iapmo-total-pfas-2026-08-13/). Q: Is the Ninja HydraSense water filter certified for PFAS? A: SharkNinja began selling the Ninja HydraSense countertop filter on August 13, 2026; it is listed by IAPMO R&T under NSF/ANSI 42, 53 and 401, including a 7-PFAS 'Total PFAS' claim, lead and microplastics. - 2026-08-03: [EPA publishes protocol for its fluoride toxicity review](https://whatfilterremoves.com/updates/epa-fluoride-review-protocol-2026-08-03/). Q: Is the EPA changing the fluoride limit in drinking water? A: On August 3, 2026 EPA released the protocol for its fluoride human health toxicity assessment, the next step in an accelerated review that could lead to a revised drinking water standard; the current limit, 4.0 mg/L, is unchanged. The reverse osmosis systems we track send between 0.25 and 3.03 gallons to the drain for each gallon of filtered water (median 0.5, across 24 systems that publish it; lower is better). For 2 people drinking and cooking with it, that is about 102 gallons a year, roughly $2.15 of water and sewer. For comparison, EPA estimates a typical reverse osmosis unit sends at least 5 gallons to the drain per gallon treated, and WaterSense-labeled models no more than 2.3. (https://whatfilterremoves.com/guides/reverse-osmosis-waste-water/) - How often should you change a water filter? By the brands' own ratings: pitcher filters about every 2 months, faucet-mount filters about every 3 months, under-sink filters about every 12 months, reverse osmosis filter stages about every 12 months, whole-house filters about every 6 months (medians across the filters we track). Change a filter at its gallon rating or month limit, whichever comes first; a busy household reaches the gallon limit sooner. (https://whatfilterremoves.com/guides/how-often-to-change-water-filter/) - What do NSF/ANSI 42, 53, 58, 401 and 473 mean? NSF/ANSI 42: certifies that point-of-use or whole-house filters reduce non-health (aesthetic) contaminants such as chlorine, taste and odor, chloramine, particulate, iron, manganese, zinc and TDS; NSF/ANSI 53: certifies that point-of-use or whole-house filters reduce specific health-related contaminants (over 50 claims, e.g., lead, Cryptosporidium, VOCs, chromium, PFOA/PFOS); NSF/ANSI 58: covers reverse osmosis systems that push water through a semi-permeable membrane to reduce EPA/Health Canada-regulated contaminants; NSF/ANSI 401: certifies reduction of up to 15 trace 'emerging' contaminants (e.g., certain pharmaceuticals, herbicides, pesticides, BPA) not regulated by EPA/Health Canada; microplastics claim also sits here; NSF/ANSI 473: NSF P473 was a 2016 protocol testing filter reduction of PFOA/PFOS to EPA's 2016 70 ppt health advisory; its methods were folded into NSF/ANSI 53 and 58, and all P473 listings were replaced by 53/58. A product is certified only if a certifier lists it; "tested to NSF standards" is not a certification. (https://whatfilterremoves.com/guides/nsf-standards-explained/) - What is the EPA limit for PFAS in drinking water? The EPA's limit is 4 ppt (ng/L) for PFOA and for PFOS. All six limits set in April 2024 remain in effect as of October 2026: PFOA and PFOS 4.0 ppt each; PFHxS, PFNA and HFPO-DA (GenX) 10 ppt; and a Hazard Index of 1 for mixtures. Public water systems must comply by April 26, 2029. In May 2026 EPA proposed letting utilities extend the PFOA and PFOS deadline to April 2031 and rescinding the other four limits; those proposals are not final. Filter certifications for PFAS (NSF/ANSI 53 and 58) currently test reduction to below 20 ppt combined, not to the 4 ppt limits; EPA says current certifications do not yet show removal down to those levels. (https://whatfilterremoves.com/guides/pfas-drinking-water-limit/) - How do I find out what's in my tap water? Community water systems must deliver a Consumer Confidence Report by July 1 each year, covering the previous calendar year's data. EPA recommends testing a private well every year for total coliform bacteria, nitrates, total dissolved solids, pH. EPA does not regulate private wells. Gallons a year = people × 0.28 gal/day (drinking and cooking) × 365, or × 58.6 gal/day (all indoor use) for whole-house filters. Reverse osmosis adds drain water: gallons ÷ pure-to-drain ratio × $21.03 per 1,000 gal.
