What is the EPA limit for PFAS in drinking water?

The EPA's limit is 4 ppt (ng/L) for PFOA and for PFOS. All six limits set in April 2024 remain in effect as of October 2026: PFOA and PFOS 4.0 ppt each; PFHxS, PFNA and HFPO-DA (GenX) 10 ppt; and a Hazard Index of 1 for mixtures. Public water systems must comply by April 26, 2029. In May 2026 EPA proposed letting utilities extend the PFOA and PFOS deadline to April 2031 and rescinding the other four limits; those proposals are not final. Filter certifications for PFAS (NSF/ANSI 53 and 58) currently test reduction to below 20 ppt combined, not to the 4 ppt limits; EPA says current certifications do not yet show removal down to those levels.
