What Filter Removes

Which water filters remove PFAS?

29 of the 96 water filters we track are certified to reduce PFAS (NSF/ANSI 53 and NSF/ANSI 58 listings). The lowest-priced is the ZeroWater 10-cup pitcher (pitcher, $38; about $272 a year in filters for 2 people). Counting a year of replacement filters, the cheapest to own is the A. O. Smith AO-US-200 2-Stage Under Sink ($308 the first year). 29 more claim it from brand-run lab tests only, which is not certification.

The EPA legal limits (MCLs) for PFAS in public drinking water are 4 ppt each for PFOA and PFOS, and 10 ppt for PFHxS, PFNA and HFPO-DA (GenX), set in 2024 with compliance due in 2029.

Source note

For PFOA and for PFOS each; MCLG 0. Set by EPA's April 2024 final rule, which still stands: EPA's May 2026 proposals to change it are not final, and the D.C. Circuit heard arguments in the utilities' challenge (AWWA v. EPA) on September 18, 2026, with no decision as of October 23, 2026. epa.gov

About PFAS certification: NSF/ANSI 53 and 58 currently certify PFAS reduction to below 20 ppt combined, not to the EPA's 4 ppt limits for PFOA and PFOS. EPA says current certifications don't yet show removal down to those levels. A certified filter is still the best evidence available.

These brands cite a lab report for PFAS, but no certifier lists the claim for the product. A lab report can be real; it is not an independent, ongoing certification with factory audits.

Common questions

Which water filters remove PFAS?

29 of the 96 water filters we track are certified to reduce PFAS (NSF/ANSI 53 and NSF/ANSI 58 listings). The lowest-priced is the ZeroWater 10-cup pitcher (pitcher, $38; about $272 a year in filters for 2 people). Counting a year of replacement filters, the cheapest to own is the A. O. Is there a legal limit for PFAS in tap water?

The EPA legal limits (MCLs) for PFAS in public drinking water are 4 ppt each for PFOA and PFOS, and 10 ppt for PFHxS, PFNA and HFPO-DA (GenX), set in 2024 with compliance due in 2029. All six limits set in April 2024 remain in effect as of October 2026: PFOA and PFOS 4.0 ppt each; PFHxS, PFNA and HFPO-DA (GenX) 10 ppt; and a Hazard Index of 1 for mixtures. Public water systems must comply by April 26, 2029. In May 2026 EPA proposed letting utilities extend the PFOA and PFOS deadline to April 2031 and rescinding the other four limits; those proposals are not final. Filter certifications for PFAS (NSF/ANSI 53 and 58) currently test reduction to below 20 ppt combined, not to the 4 ppt limits; EPA says current certifications do not yet show removal down to those levels.

How do I know a filter really removes PFAS?

Look it up in the certifier's public database (NSF, WQA, IAPMO or CSA) under the exact model, and check that PFAS is in its list of reduction claims (usually under NSF/ANSI 53 or 58). "Tested to NSF standards" in an ad is not the same as a listing.
